When startled, this lizard may run into a hole in the rocks and inflate itself by gulping air. The chuckwalla then becomes wedged into the rock and is almost impossible for an attacker to dislodge. Another defense mechanism used by the chuckwalla is its ability to change color to blend in with its surroundings.
